Jamaica based, Grammy Award winning artiste Sean Paul is actively securing a bright future for young Jamaicans through his partnership with the Alpha Institute.

Following a recent tour of the school premises formerly known as the Alpha Boys School, the multi- platinum, recording artiste was able to see where his donation of over $1.5 million was used in the development of the studio and rooms under the Music Technology Department.

Now to be called the Sean Paul Henriques Media Centre, the department houses a skills training centre for its students in Music and Technology and now has a high-grade studio.

Sean Paul is heartened by the realities of who joined him on the tour over their Christmas break. Music Technology students Sajay Waton, also called DJ Wrist expressed great joy to be able to interact with and receive musical advice from the artiste. His joy, however, was surpassed by his class mate Roshard ‘DJ Rushian’ Henry who was elated to have Sean Paul voice a quick jingle over a riddim he produced in class.

The students were comfortable sharing their experiences, highlighting the changes the programme has made for them. “I used to be so angry, everyone in the community, in my family, even if you didn’t know me, you could see that anger. But coming here, I just do my music and I have people to talk to here. Now, being DJ Rushian I have a purpose and I spread joy to other people through my music. If you look at my batch, DJ Wrist can go out on weekends and earn money, we are professionals and it’s thanks to this programme,” expressed Roshard Henry in his talk with Sean Paul, administrators of the school and his Music Technology classmates.

The charitable organization was grateful for the artiste’s donations and subsequent visit. Reverend Don McDowell, the Audio Engineering Instructor looks forward to the student’s realizing successes and great achievements as a result of Sean Paul’s contributions.

“They are taking initiative and demonstrating responsibility and respect for the space and technical activities inside of it. I've seen their morale increase which I attribute to their love for the music technology and career they see themselves stepping into,” McDowell expressed with great pride in reference to the first set of students to sit this programme who are now sitting their third and final year.

Sean Paul continues to support initiatives geared at improving lives, over the years the artiste has donated to the Maxfield Children’s Home, National Children’s Home and the Father Holung & Friends charities among others.

Sean Paul on stage recently

Sean Paul continues to imprint his stamp on the music industry, representing his music and Jamaican music worldwide.

Having been atop the Billboard Hot 100 charts for all of August and still retaining the top position on Billboard’s Radio Chart with his Cheap Thrills Sia collaboration, Sean Paul continues to put his best foot forward.

The Grammy Award winning, Jamaican recording artist, having recently signed with Island Records has been making his presence felt, pushing the dancehall beat across the world with performances, appearances, and new releases.

The artiste recently appeared at the annual Bestival music festival on the Island of Wight. Slated to perform on the last day of the four-day festival, Sean Paul performed before the closer Wiz Khalifa. Reviews however raved Sean Paul’s performance to be a literal ‘show stopper’ on September 11.

“The responsibility of closing the main stage on Sunday may have fallen to Wiz Khalifa, but it was Sean Paul’s set that people couldn’t stop talking about all day”, reported Huffington Post’s Rachel McGrath.

Sean Paul then headed to Camdem, London, where he performed at the Electric Ballrooom on September 13. His first appearance in London for the past three years, Sean Paul surely made up for lost times to his British fans. Performing a full hour-long set with his own hits such as Temperature and Get Busy, Sean Paul kept it “burnin’” with song selections including Cheap Thrills, Hair and most recent Crick Neck collaborations with Australian singer Sia, all-female group Little Mix and Dancehall artiste Chi-Ching Ching, respectively. Kingston, Jamaica: International dancehall superstar Sean Paul set the record straight in a recently posted five-part Instagram video after reactions to his interview in Britain’s The Guardian hit the internet.

Specifically responding to Jamaican-born YouTube blogger DJ Akademiks, Sean Paul— in the first of the Instagram videos— said the blogger referred to him for the first time on his vlog after the publication of the piece on September 5, 2016.

“I see you mention Popcaan already due to the affiliation with Sir Drake, hear you mention Beenie Man and Vegas due to the same type of thing. I never hear yuh big up me yet. And other Jamaicans yuh big up Gage and Busy Signal,” said the 20-year dancehall veteran.

“So as a Jamaican, born and grow inna Spanish Town, me a big you up fi dat,” he said, while urging DJ Akademiks to talk more about dancehall on his widely watched entertainment vlog.

He went on to say in the videos, that it is not the first time that dancehall has influenced international music hits. “Back in the 90s Ace of Base did some songs that went number one, that to me was dancehall oriented… What I was asked in the interview, my response — there was a little piece left off — I said to some people, it is a sore point. I remember back in the day, when Ace of Base was doing dem ting, it was a sore point to me… that none of us was there; Shabba Ranks and Super Cat was huge artiste to me, and none of them was reflected in that type of song… But I was also proud because it was dancehall music,” the Grammy winner explained.

“My point to them [The Guardian] was, if people are doing these songs and sampling us and thing and we’re not being credited; that’s not a cool thing. But at the same point in time, if those artistes see gold in what we do as Jamaican musicians, more power to we. If those artistes that are being sampled as Jamaicans and appearing in the songs and they’re not getting any credit that you [the general public] see, maybe they’re getting things that we don’t know of, so more power to them. Me nuh mind that. None of this really came out in the interview. So mi just wan’ say to everybody calm down, big up unnu self. I am a dancehall artiste that has nothing else to prove,” Sean Paul said.

Kingston, Jamaica: Multi-platinum, Grammy Award winning, superstar Sean Paul has signed with Island Records.

Falling under the internationally acclaimed umbrella brand, Universal Music Group, Island Records has a history of propelling reggae to world success, most notably with the career of music legend Bob Marley.

“What Sean has done for Jamaica and helping reggae music crossover makes him nothing short of a cultural icon,” president of Island Records U.K. Darcus Beese, told billboard.com. “I don’t think there’s anything more potent or authentic than Island Records sitting down with a reggae artiste of his calibre and having a conversation about signing them. It’s absolutely a natural fit.”

For Sean Paul, the signing with Island Records offers the same space and creative freedom that he developed with his own Dutty Rock label.

“Dancehall has now become mainstream international music, rather than underground where it was for years. Island [Records] is an iconic label. It makes me feel new all over again,” said the 20-year music veteran.

“Now I have got a deal with Island where they recognise that ‘he knows what his fanbase needs and knows exactly what he wants to put out’,” Sean Paul explained. “We don’t need to help him in that direction. We need to facilitate people knowing about his work. That’s just a great thing for me.”

The two-time Grammy Award winner officially signed with Island Records in August.

Making the Hits

Sean Paul achieved his fourth Billboard Hot 100 number one song for his collaboration with Sia on Cheap Thrills this year.
